On 28 May 2025 Advocate Michelle Phillips, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Transnet, being the South African state-owned logistics company responsible for rail, port and pipeline infrastructure, gave a presentation on the status of Transnet. Advocate Phillips lamented the extent to which the port and rail network had degenerated. However, through private sector partnerships, steps were to be taken to rejuvenate and restore efficiency and competitiveness.

ZAR 127,70 billion would be invested in Transnet over the next 5 years, to upgrade the port and rail systems, which would include the construction of truck staging areas and the replacement of port helicopters and tugs.

On 29 September 2025, in an article titled ‘’Going from zero to hero’’, the author Shaun Jacobs reported that Transnet’s operational performance had improved remarkably over the past year.

In 2018 Transnet had transported 226 million tonnes of cargo by rail, which dropped to 149 million tonnes by 2022/23 but had now risen to 171 million tonnes.

This can be attributed to the introduction of private rail operators, the reduction of vandalism and corruption, and improvements in maintenance.

May this positive trend continue into the future.
