NEW EARNINGS THRESHOLD PRONOUNCED
A new earnings threshold was released on 20 February 2023 which seeks to increase the minimum earning threshold to R241 110.59 per annum, up from the current R224 080.48 per annum. This increase will come into effect from 01 March 2023.
The effect of this increase will mean that anyone earning under the threshold will be entitled to the protections afforded under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act relating to working hours and payment of overtime.
This increase will also have an effect on certain sections of the Labour Relations Act, such as excluding those employees who earn above the threshold from the requirements relating to fixed-term contracts.
