Specialisations and Interests

Samantha is the lead partner in Shepstone & Wylie’s pension law and employee benefits team with over twenty years’ experience. She is an independent trustee of a large hybrid pension fund and principal officer for several retirement funds. Apart from advising on major pension issues and representing employers and funds in legal proceedings, Samantha has a wealth of practical experience concerning fund management, duties of trustees, surplus apportionment and related issues. She was chairperson of several section 15K surplus tribunals. Samantha has presented numerous papers at seminars hosted by the Institute of Retirement Funds Africa (IRFA), Pension Lawyers Association (PLA), Principal Officers Association (now BATSETA) and Black Lawyers Association. She was also a contributor to “The Manual on South African Retirement Funds and other Employee Benefits”.

 In 2023, Who’s Who Legal listed Samantha amongst the highest ranked lawyers globally for Labour, Employment & Benefits. She was most recently recognized by her peers in the 2024 edition of The Best Lawyers in South Africa™ for her high calibre work in Employee Benefits Law, and Labour and Employment Law.

Service on Boards and Associations: Samantha is a member of BATSETA and the Pension Lawyers Association (having previously managed the Durban Chapter of the PLA).  She is also a member of the Legal and Technical Committee of the Institute of Retirement Funds Africa (IRFA).
