Social Media and the Stars

Celebrities are no strangers to the power of social media. Indeed, many celebrities are using it very cleverly to enhance their profile and have a whole social media team which exclusively monitor their accounts and “tweet” or post on their behalf.  Ambitious young celebrities who are breaking onto the scene may not have that advantage but will use their social media following to enhance and build on their celebrity and in some instances, celebrity has been generated entirely in the social media sphere.

But are celebrities advised to use social media to deal with any controversies, such as the latest incident with AKA?  On the weekend at a music event the hip hop artist’s manager was allegedly slapped by another artist and AKA lost little time in airing his views on social media.  In this instance the event could be possibly be regarded as “truth and in the public interest” however, if celebrities get into the habit of discussing these issues online without the benefit of carefully considering all angles there could easily be a time when they take to social media and discuss matters which are not defensible in a court and amount to defamation.  The number of people who see those tweets are in the thousands… the publication is astounding. Managers of celebrities would be well advised to warn their clients of the pitfalls of heated tweets!
