Covid-19 and South African Ports

South Africa’s eight commercial sea ports of Richards Bay, Durban, East London, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay, Cape Town and Saldanha Bay are still operational and accepting cargo ships, but with restrictions as set out in the attached article from Africa Ports & Ships Newsletter, which is based on a statement issued by the Acting Chief Harbour Master on 19 March 2020.

In summary:

  1. crew changes at all South African ports are prohibited;
  2. passenger embarkation and disembarkation at all South African ports are prohibited, save for disembarkation of a returning South African citizen and/or permanent resident or embarkation of a departing foreign national;
  3. all sea cruises undertaken by cruise liner vessels into and out of any South African port must be terminated until further notice.
